M&S Remind Dog Owners The Dangers of Chocolate This Easter

  • * M&S remind pet owners to be careful about leaving Easter eggs out near your four legged friends.

Easter is just around the corner, and for most of us that means indulging ourselves in Easter eggs and other delicious and chocolate treats.

While most of us are aware of the need to watch ourselves during this period (temptation and the like), many forget to watch our pets, especially dogs who can quickly succumb to the chocolatey temptations as easily as us.

Unfortunately however, while our dogs share the same love for chocolate as us, their stomachs and bodies do not share the same ability to be able to properly digest Theorbomine, the toxic chemical contained within chocolate.

Dark chocolate in particular has a very high level of this chemical, and even a small piece eaten by a dog can result in serious illness including vomiting, hyper-excitability, restlessness and tremors.

The advice that M&S Pet insurance is giving this Easter is to make sure that you have easy access to medical attention, should your pet accidently eat some chocolate. M&S also warns of the little chocolate toys often contained within Easter eggs as well as the packaging, both of which bring numerous pet owners to the vets every Easter.

If you are handing out the Easter eggs this year, why not get something for the dog as well. That was, he (or she) has something to enjoy and won’t be begging you for a piece of chocolate.
